أَلَمْ
Do not
تَرَ
you see
إِلَى
at
ٱلَّذِينَ
the ones,
قِيلَ
was said
لَهُمْ
to whom,
كُفُّوٓا۟
[Restraint
أَيْدِيَكُمْ
your hands,
وَأَقِيمُوا۟
and establish
ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ
the Discipline
وَءَاتُوا۟
and produce
ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ
the Emancipation.],
فَلَمَّا
so then when
كُتِبَ
was ordained
عَلَيْهِمُ
upon them
ٱلْقِتَالُ
the fight,
إِذَا
when
فَرِيقٌۭ
a sect
مِّنْهُمْ
from them
يَخْشَوْنَ
became afraid of
ٱلنَّاسَ
the people
كَخَشْيَةِ
as they ought to be afraid of
ٱللَّهِ
the One
أَوْ
or
أَشَدَّ
even more
خَشْيَةًۭ
afraid?
ۚ
وَقَالُوا۟
And they said,
رَبَّنَا
[Our Lord!
لِمَ
Why have
كَتَبْتَ
You ordained
عَلَيْنَا
upon us
ٱلْقِتَالَ
the fight?
لَوْلَآ
How come
أَخَّرْتَنَآ
not is delayed for us
إِلَىٰٓ
till
أَجَلٍۢ
a term
قَرِيبٍۢ
after some time?]
ۗ
قُلْ
Say,
مَتَٰعُ
[Enjoyment of
ٱلدُّنْيَا
this life is
قَلِيلٌۭ
little,
وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ
while the forthcoming is
خَيْرٌۭ
better
لِّمَنِ
for whomever
ٱتَّقَىٰ
became aware,
وَلَا
and not
تُظْلَمُونَ
you will be wronged
فَتِيلًا
even as little as a twig.]
٤
٧٧
أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ قِيلَ لَهُمْ كُفُّوٓا۟ أَيْدِيَكُمْ وَأَقِيمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ فَلَمَّا كُتِبَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْقِتَالُ إِذَا فَرِيقٌۭ مِّنْهُمْ يَخْشَوْنَ ٱلنَّاسَ كَخَشْيَةِ ٱللَّهِ أَوْ أَشَدَّ خَشْيَةًۭ ۚ وَقَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا لِمَ كَتَبْتَ عَلَيْنَا ٱلْقِتَالَ لَوْلَآ أَخَّرْتَنَآ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍۢ قَرِيبٍۢ ۗ قُلْ مَتَٰعُ ٱلدُّنْيَا قَلِيلٌۭ وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ خَيْرٌۭ لِّمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰ وَلَا تُظْلَمُونَ فَتِيلًا
Do not you see at the ones, was said to whom, [Restraint your hands, and establish the Discipline and produce the Emancipation.], so then when was ordained upon them the fight, when a sect from them became afraid of the people as they ought to be afraid of the One or even more afraid? And they said, [Our Lord! Why have You ordained upon us the fight? How come not is delayed for us till a term after some time?] Say, [Enjoyment of this life is little, while the forthcoming is better for whomever became aware, and not you will be wronged even as little as a twig.]

Hast thou not seen those unto whom it was said: Withhold your hands, establish worship and pay the poordue, but when fighting was prescribed for them behold! a party of them fear mankind even as their fear of Allah or with greater fear, and say: Our Lord! Why hast Thou ordained fighting for us? If only Thou wouldst give us respite yet a while! Say (unto them, O Muhammad): The comfort of this world is scant; the Hereafter will be better for him who wardeth off (evil); and ye will not be wronged the down upon a date-stone.

Have you not regarded those who were told, [Keep your hands off [from warfare], and maintain the prayer and give the zakat]? But when fighting was prescribed for them, behold, a part of them feared the people as if fearing Allah, or were even more afraid, and they said, [Our Lord! Why did You prescribe fighting for us? Why did You not respite us for a short time?!] Say, [The enjoyments of this world are trifle and the Hereafter is better for the Godwary, and you will not be wronged so much as a single date-thread.

Have you not seen those who were told to stop fighting, to say their prayers, and pay the religious tax? When they were ordered to fight, some of them feared other men as much as or more than they feared God and so they said, [Lord, why have you ordered us to fight? If only you would give us a little time.] (Muhammad), tell them, [The pleasures of the worldly life are trivial. The life hereafter is best for the pious ones. You will not be treated the slightest bit unjustly.

Have you not seen those to whom it was said: Withhold your hands, and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate; but when fighting is prescribed for them, lo! a party of them fear men as they ought to have feared Allah, or (even) with a greater fear, and say: Our Lord! why hast Thou ordained fighting for us? Wherefore didst Thou not grant us a delay to a near end? Say: The provision of this world is short, and the hereafter is better for him who guards (against evil); and you shall not be wronged the husk of a date stone.

Have you not seen those to whom it was said, [Restrain your hands, say your prayers and pay the prescribed alms?] And when they have been ordered to fight, some of them have felt afraid of human beings just as they should be afraid of God, or they are even more afraid. They say, [Our Lord, why have You ordered us to fight? If You would only postpone it for a little while longer!] Say, [The benefits of this world are negligible and the Hereafter will be better for one who fears God; and you shall not be wronged in the slightest.

کیا تم نے ان لوگوں کو نہیں دیکھا جن سے کہا گیا تھا کہ ہاتھ روکے رکھو اور نماز قائم کرو, زکوِٰادا کرو(تو بے چین ہوگئے) اور جب جہاد واجب کردیا گیا تو ایک گروہ لوگوں(دشمنوں) سے اس قدر ڈرتا تھا جیسے خدا سے ڈرتا ہو یا اس سے بھی کچھ زیادہ اور یہ کہتے ہیں کہ خدایا اتنی جلدی کیوں جہاد واجب کردیا کاش تھوڑی مدت تک اور ٹال دیاجاتا پیغمبرآپ کہہ دیجئے کہ دنیا کا سرمایہ بہت تھوڑا ہے اور آخرت صاحبانِ تقوٰی کے لئے بہترین جگہ ہے اور تم پر دھاگہ برابر بھی ظلم نہیں کیا جائے گا

تم نے اُن لوگوں کو بھی دیکھا جن سے کہا گیا تھا کہ اپنے ہاتھ روکے رکھو اور نماز قائم کرو اور زکوٰۃ دو؟ اب جو انہیں لڑائی کا حکم دیا گیا تو ان میں سے ایک فریق کا حال یہ ہے کہ لوگوں سے ایسا ڈر رہے ہیں جیسا خدا سے ڈرنا چاہیے یا کچھ اس سے بھی بڑھ کر کہتے ہیں خدایا! یہ ہم پر لڑائی کا حکم کیوں لکھ دیا؟ کیوں نہ ہمیں ابھی کچھ اور مہلت دی؟ ان سے کہو، دنیا کا سرمایہ زندگی تھوڑا ہے، اور آخرت ایک خدا ترس انسان کے لیے زیادہ بہتر ہے، اور تم پر ظلم ایک شمہ برابر بھی نہ کیا جائے گا

کیا تم نے انہیں نہ دیکھا جن سے کہا گیا اپنے ہاتھ روک لو اور نماز قائم رکھو اور زکوٰة دو پھر جب ان پر جہاد فرض کیا گیا تو ان میں بعضے لوگوں سے ایسا ڈرنے لگے جیسے اللہ سے ڈرے یا اس سے بھی زائد اور بولے اے رب ہمارے! تو نے ہم پر جہاد کیوں فرض کردیا تھوڑی مدت تک ہمیں اور جینے دیا ہوتا، تم فرما دو کہ دنیا کا برتنا تھوڑا ہے اور ڈر والوں کے لئے آخرت اچھی اور تم پر تاگے برابر ظلم نہ ہوگا

کیا تم نے ان لوگوں کو نہیں دیکھا جن سے کہا گیا تھا کہ اپنے ہاتھ روکے رہو اور نماز پڑھو اور زکوٰۃ ادا کرو۔ پھر جب ان پر جدال و قتال فرض کر دیا گیا۔ تو ان میں سے ایک گروہ انسانوں سے اس طرح ڈرنے لگا، جیسے اللہ سے ڈرنا چاہیے یا اس سے بھی زیادہ۔ اور کہنے لگا پروردگار! تو نے کیوں (اتنا جلدی) ہم پر جہاد فرض کر دیا۔ اور تھوڑی مدت تک ہمیں مہلت کیوں نہ دی؟ (اے نبی) کہہ دیجیے کہ دنیا کا سامان بہت تھوڑا ہے اور جو متقی و پرہیزگار ہے اس کے لئے آخرت بہت بہتر ہے اور تم پر کھجور کی گھٹلی کے ریشہ برابر (ذرہ بھی) ظلم نہیں کیا جائے گا۔

[Wherever

you may exist,

will overtake you
ٱلْمَوْتُ
the death,
وَلَوْ
even if
كُنتُمْ
you happen to be
فِى

بُرُوجٍۢ
towers
مُّشَيَّدَةٍۢ
erected high];
ۗ
وَإِن
and if
تُصِبْهُمْ
befalls at them
حَسَنَةٌۭ
goodness
يَقُولُوا۟
they say,
هَٰذِهِۦ
[This is
مِنْ
from
عِندِ
near
ٱللَّهِ
the One],
ۖ
وَإِن
and if
تُصِبْهُمْ
befalls at them
سَيِّئَةٌۭ
evil
يَقُولُوا۟
they declare,
هَٰذِهِۦ
[This is
مِنْ
from
عِندِكَ
near you].
ۚ
قُلْ
Say,
كُلٌّۭ
[All is
مِّنْ
from
عِندِ
nearing
ٱللَّهِ
the One.]
ۖ
فَمَالِ
So for what is it, that
هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ
these people of
ٱلْقَوْمِ
the nation,
لَا
not
يَكَادُونَ
are bright enough to
يَفْقَهُونَ
understand
حَدِيثًۭا
a narrative?
٤
٧٨
أَيْنَمَا تَكُونُوا۟ يُدْرِككُّمُ ٱلْمَوْتُ وَلَوْ كُنتُمْ فِى بُرُوجٍۢ مُّشَيَّدَةٍۢ ۗ وَإِن تُصِبْهُمْ حَسَنَةٌۭ يَقُولُوا۟ هَٰذِهِۦ مِنْ عِندِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ وَإِن تُصِبْهُمْ سَيِّئَةٌۭ يَقُولُوا۟ هَٰذِهِۦ مِنْ عِندِكَ ۚ قُلْ كُلٌّۭ مِّنْ عِندِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ فَمَالِ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ ٱلْقَوْمِ لَا يَكَادُونَ يَفْقَهُونَ حَدِيثًۭا
[Wherever you may exist, will overtake you the death, even if you happen to be in towers erected high]; and if befalls at them goodness they say, [This is from near the One], and if befalls at them evil they declare, [This is from near you]. Say, [All is from nearing the One.] So for what is it, that these people of the nation, not are bright enough to understand a narrative?

Wheresoever ye may be, death will overtake you, even though ye were in lofty towers. Yet if a happy thing befalleth them they say: This is from Allah; and if an evil thing befalleth them they say: This is of thy doing (O Muhammad). Say (unto them): All is from Allah. What is amiss with these people that they come not nigh to understand a happening?

Wherever you may be death will overtake you, even if you were in fortified towers.] If any good befalls them, they say, [This is from Allah;] and when an ill befalls them, they say, [This is from you.] Say, [All is from Allah.] What is the matter with these people that they would not understand any matter?

Wherever you are, death will find you even if you hide yourselves in firmly constructed towers. Whenever people experience good fortune, they say that it is from God but whenever they experience misfortune, they say it is because of you, (Muhammad). Tell them, [Everything is from God.] What is wrong with these people that they do not even try to understand?

Wherever you are, death will overtake you, though you are in lofty towers, and if a benefit comes to them, they say: This is from Allah; and if a misfortune befalls them, they say: This is from you. Say: All is from Allah, but what is the matter with these people that they do not make approach to understanding what is told (them)?

تم جہاں بھی رہو گے موت تمہیں پالے گی چاہے مستحکم قلعوں میں کیوں نہ بند ہوجاؤ- ان لوگوں کا حال یہ ہے کہ اچھے حالات پیدا ہوتے ہیں تو کہتے ہیں کہ یہ خدا کی طرف سے ہے اور مصیبت آتی ہے تو کہتے ہیں کہ یہ آپ کی طرف سے ہے تو آپ کہہ دیجئے کہ سب خدا کی طرف سے ہے پھر آخر اس قوم کو کیا ہوگیا ہے کہ یہ کوئی بات سمجھتی ہی نہیں ہے

رہی موت، تو جہاں بھی تم ہو وہ بہرحال تمہیں آکر رہے گی خواہ تم کیسی ہی مضبوط عمارتوں میں ہو اگر انہیں کوئی فائدہ پہنچتا ہے تو کہتے ہیں یہ اللہ کی طرف سے ہے، اور اگر کوئی نقصان پہنچتا ہے تو کہتے ہیں یہ تمہاری بدولت ہے کہو، سب کچھ اللہ ہی کی طرف سے ہے آخر ان لوگوں کو کیا ہو گیا ہے کہ کوئی بات ان کی سمجھ میں نہیں آتی

تم جہاں کہیں ہو موت تمہیں آلے گی اگرچہ مضبوط قلعوں میں ہو اور اُنہیں کوئی بھلائی پہنچے تو کہیں یہ اللہ کی طرف سے ہے اور انہیں کوئی برائی پہنچے تو کہیں یہ حضور کی طرف آئی تم فرمادو سب اللہ کی طرف سے ہے تو ان لوگوں کو کیا ہوا کوئی بات سمجھتے معلوم ہی نہیں ہوتے،

تم جہاں کہیں بھی ہوگے، موت تمہیں آئے گی اگرچہ تم مضبوط قلعوں میں کیوں نہ ہو اور جب انہیں بھلائی پہنچتی ہے۔ تو کہتے ہیں کہ یہ اللہ کی طرف سے ہے اور جب کوئی برائی اور تکلیف پہنچتی ہے تو کہتے ہیں کہ یہ آپ کی وجہ سے ہے۔ کہہ دیجیے کہ یہ سب کچھ اللہ ہی کی طرف سے ہے آخر ان لوگوں کو کیا ہوگیا ہے کہ کوئی بات سمجھتے ہی نہیں ہیں؟ ۔

What
أَصَابَكَ
befalls you
مِنْ
from
حَسَنَةٍۢ
goodness
فَمِنَ
thus is from
ٱللَّهِ
the One,
ۖ
وَمَآ
and what
أَصَابَكَ
befalls at you
مِن
from
سَيِّئَةٍۢ
evil,
فَمِن
thus is
نَّفْسِكَ
from your own psyche;
ۚ
وَأَرْسَلْنَٰكَ
and We have sent you
لِلنَّاسِ
for the people
رَسُولًۭا
as a messenger,
ۚ
وَكَفَىٰ
and suffice
بِٱللَّهِ
by the One
شَهِيدًۭا
as a witness.
٤
٧٩
مَّآ أَصَابَكَ مِنْ حَسَنَةٍۢ فَمِنَ ٱللَّهِ ۖ وَمَآ أَصَابَكَ مِن سَيِّئَةٍۢ فَمِن نَّفْسِكَ ۚ وَأَرْسَلْنَٰكَ لِلنَّاسِ رَسُولًۭا ۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِٱللَّهِ شَهِيدًۭا
What befalls you from goodness thus is from the One, and what befalls at you from evil, thus is from your own psyche; and We have sent you for the people as a messenger, and suffice by the One as a witness.

Whatever of good befalleth thee (O man) it is from Allah, and whatever of ill befalleth thee it is from thyself. We have sent thee (Muhammad) as a messenger unto mankind and Allah is sufficient as Witness.

Whatever good befalls you is from Allah; and whatever ill befalls you is from yourself. We sent you as an apostle to mankind, and Allah suffices as witness.

Whatever good you may receive is certainly from God and whatever you suffer is from yourselves. We have sent you, (Muhammad), as a Messenger to people. God is a Sufficient witness to your truthfulness.

Whatever benefit comes to you (O man!), it is from Allah, and whatever misfortune befalls you, it is from yourself, and We have sent you (O Prophet!), to mankind as an apostle; and Allah is sufficient as a witness.

اے انسان! تجھے جو بھلائی بھی حاصل ہوتی ہے اللہ کی عنایت سے ہوتی ہے، اور جو مصیبت تجھ پر آتی ہے وہ تیرے اپنے کسب و عمل کی بدولت ہے اے محمدؐ! ہم نے تم کو لوگوں کے لیے رسول بنا کر بھیجا ہے اوراس پر خدا کی گواہی کافی ہے

اے سننے والے تجھے جو بھلائی پہنچے وہ اللہ کی طرف سے ہے اور جو برائی پہنچے وہ تیری اپنی طرف سے ہے اور اے محبوب ہم نے تمہیں سب لوگوں کے لئے رسول بھیجا اور اللہ کافی ہے گواہ

Whoever

conforms to
ٱلرَّسُولَ
the Messenger,

thus surely
أَطَاعَ

and whoever
تَوَلَّىٰ
turned their back,
فَمَآ
then not
أَرْسَلْنَٰكَ
We have sent you
عَلَيْهِمْ
upon them
حَفِيظًۭا
as a protector.

مَّن يُطِعِ ٱلرَّسُولَ فَقَدْ أَطَاعَ ٱللَّهَ ۖ وَمَن تَوَلَّىٰ فَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَٰكَ عَلَيْهِمْ حَفِيظًۭا
Whoever conforms to the Messenger, thus surely conforms to the One, and whoever turned their back, then not We have sent you upon them as a protector.

Whoso obeyeth the messenger hath obeyed Allah, and whoso turneth away: We have not sent thee as a warder over them.

And they say: (It is) obedience; but when they have gone forth from thee a party of them spend the night in planning other than what thou sayest. Allah recordeth what they plan by night. So oppose them and put thy trust in Allah. Allah is sufficient as Trustee.

They profess obedience [to you], but when they go out from your presence, a group of them conspire overnight [to do] something other than what you say. But Allah records what they conspire overnight. So disregard them and put your trust in Allah, for Allah suffices as trustee.

they consider
ٱلْقُرْءَانَ
the Proclamatory Reading?
ۚ
وَلَوْ
And if
كَانَ
had been
مِنْ
from
عِندِ
an origin
غَيْرِ
other than
ٱللَّهِ
the One's
لَوَجَدُوا۟
surely would have found
فِيهِ
in it
ٱخْتِلَٰفًۭا
contradictions
كَثِيرًۭا
in abundance.

أَفَلَا يَتَدَبَّرُونَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ ۚ وَلَوْ كَانَ مِنْ عِندِ غَيْرِ ٱللَّهِ لَوَجَدُوا۟ فِيهِ ٱخْتِلَٰفًۭا كَثِيرًۭا
Then why do not they consider the Proclamatory Reading? And if had been from an origin other than the One's surely would have found in it contradictions in abundance.

Will they not then ponder on the Qur'an? If it had been from other than Allah they would have found therein much incongruity.

And if any tidings, whether of safety or fear, come unto them, they noise it abroad, whereas if they had referred it to the messenger and to such of them as are in authority, those among them who are able to think out the matter would have known it. If it had not been for the grace of Allah upon you and His mercy ye would have followed Satan, save a few (of you).

When a report of safety or alarm comes to them, they immediately broadcast it; but had they referred it to the Apostle or to those vested with authority among them, those of them who investigate would have ascertained it. And were it not for Allah]s grace upon you and His mercy, you would have surely followed Satan, [all] except a few.

یہ لوگ جہاں کوئی اطمینان بخش یا خوفناک خبر سن پاتے ہیں اُسے لے کر پھیلا دیتے ہیں، حالانکہ اگر یہ اُسے رسول اور اپنی جماعت کے ذمہ دار اصحاب تک پہنچائیں تو وہ ایسے لوگوں کے علم میں آ جائے جو اِن کے درمیان اس بات کی صلاحیت رکھتے ہیں کہ اس سے صحیح نتیجہ اخذ کرسکیں تم لوگوں پر اللہ کی مہربانی اور رحمت نہ ہوتی تو (تمہاری کمزوریاں ایسی تھیں کہ) معدودے چند کے سوا تم سب شیطان کے پیچھے لگ گئے ہوتے

اور جب ان کے پاس کوئی بات اطمینان یا ڈر کی آتی ہے اس کا چرچا کر بیٹھتے ہیں اور اگر اس میں رسول اور اپنے ذی اختیار لوگوں کی طرف رجوع لاتے تو ضرور اُن سے اُ س کی حقیقت جان لیتے یہ جو بعد میں کاوش کرتے ہیں اور اگر تم پر اللہ کا فضل اور اس کی رحمت نہ ہوتی تو ضرور تم شیطان کے پیچھے لگ جاتے مگر تھوڑے

So fight (O Muhammad) in the way of Allah Thou art not taxed (with the responsibility for anyone) except thyself - and urge on the believers. Peradventure Allah will restrain the might of those who disbelieve. Allah is stronger in might and stronger in inflicting punishment.

Whoso interveneth in a good cause will have the reward thereof, and whoso interveneth in an evil cause will bear the consequence thereof. Allah overseeth all things.

وَإِذَا حُيِّيتُم بِتَحِيَّةٍۢ فَحَيُّوا۟ بِأَحْسَنَ مِنْهَآ أَوْ رُدُّوهَآ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ حَسِيبًا
And whenever you are signalled with peace, then signal back with better of it or reciprocate it; assuredly the One has been over all things calculative.

When ye are greeted with a greeting, greet ye with a better than it or return it. Lo! Allah taketh count of all things.

ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ لَيَجْمَعَنَّكُمْ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ ۗ وَمَنْ أَصْدَقُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ حَدِيثًۭا
The One — no unchallenged master except Him — He is to collect you altogether towards day of the establishment no doubt is in it! And who is truer as compared to the One at providing a hadith (narration)?

Allah! There is no Allah save Him. He gathereth you all unto a Day of Resurrection whereof there is no doubt. Who is more true in statement than Allah?

This website is a work of passion. It exists only for a couple of reasons:

1) I wanted to understand the Book without involving any second-party sources of guidance i.e. exegesis, or Asbab-e-Nuzul, or extra-Quranic ahadith, etc.
2) You must also know what the bare truth is, so we can work together.

Because the process must be transparent, the entire website is available for you to download. You can go through the code, and if you can make any improvements to this process, you are most welcome to. It is a humble request to update me regarding the improvements so I can also update myself.
