١٩

أَشِحَّةً عَلَيْكُمْ ۖ فَإِذَا جَآءَ ٱلْخَوْفُ رَأَيْتَهُمْ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَيْكَ تَدُورُ أَعْيُنُهُمْ كَٱلَّذِى يُغْشَىٰ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْمَوْتِ ۖ فَإِذَا ذَهَبَ ٱلْخَوْفُ سَلَقُوكُم بِأَلْسِنَةٍ حِدَادٍ أَشِحَّةً عَلَى ٱلْخَيْرِ ۚ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ لَمْ يُؤْمِنُوا۟ فَأَحْبَطَ ٱللَّهُ أَعْمَٰلَهُمْ ۚ وَكَانَ ذَٰلِكَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ يَسِيرًۭا

⦿

Being sparing of their help to you (believers). But when the fear cometh, then thou (Muhammad) seest them regarding thee with rolling eyes like one who fainteth unto death. Then, when the fear departeth, they scald you with sharp tongues in their greed for wealth (from the spoil). Such have not believed. Therefor Allah maketh their deeds fruitless. And that is easy for Allah.

grudging you [their help]. So when there is panic, you see them looking at you, with their eyes rolling like someone fainting at death. Then, when the panic is over, they scald you with [their] sharp tongues in their greed for the spoils. They never have had faith. So Allah has made their works fail, and that is easy for Allah.

They are niggardly in spending for you. When fear comes, you can see them looking at you, their eyes rolling about like to faint because of the agony of death. When their fear subsides, they start to bite you with their sharp tongues. They are miserly in spending for a virtuous cause and have no faith. God has turned their deeds devoid of all virtue. This was not at all difficult for God.

Being niggardly with respect to you; but when fear comes, you will see them looking to you, their eyes rolling like one swooning because of death; but when the fear is gone they smite you with sharp tongues, being niggardly of the good things. These have not believed, therefore Allah has made their doing naught; and this is easy to Allah.

Begrudging you all help, but when danger comes, you can see them looking at you with rolling eyes as if in their death throes; but once their fear has passed, they come to you and do glib-talking in their greed for wealth. Such men have no faith, so God has foiled their actions. This is indeed easy for God.

یہ تم سے جان چراتے ہیں اور جب خوف سامنے آجائے گا تو آپ دیکھیں گے کہ آپ کی طرف اس طرح دیکھیں گے کہ جیسے ان کی آنکھیں یوں پھر رہی ہیں جیسے موت کی غشی طاری ہو اور جب خوف چلا جائے گا تو آپ پر تیز تر زبانوں کے ساتھ حملہ کریں گے اور انہیں مال غنیمت کی حرص ہوگی یہ لوگ شروع ہی سے ایمان نہیں لائے ہیں لہٰذا خدا نے ان کے اعمال کو برباد کردیا ہے اور خدا کے لئے یہ کام بڑا آسان ہے

جو تمہارا ساتھ دینے میں سخت بخیل ہیں خطرے کا وقت آ جائے تو اس طرح دیدے پھرا پھرا کر تمہاری طرف دیکھتے ہیں جیسے کسی مرنے والے پر غشی طاری ہو رہی ہو، مگر جب خطرہ گزر جاتا ہے تو یہی لوگ فائدوں کے حریص بن کر قینچی کی طرح چلتی ہوئی زبانیں لیے تمہارے استقبال کو آ جاتے ہیں یہ لوگ ہرگز ایمان نہیں لائے، اسی لیے اللہ نے ان کے سارے اعمال ضائع کر دیے اور ایسا کرنا اللہ کے لیے بہت آسان ہے

تمہاری مدد میں گئی کرتے (کمی کرتے) ہیں پھر جب ڈر کا وقت آئے تم انہیں دیکھو گے تمہاری طرف یوں نظر کرتے ہیں کہ ان کی آنکھیں گھوم رہی ہیں جیسے کسی پر موت چھائی ہو پھر جب ڈر کا وقت نکل جائے تمہیں طعنے دینے لگیں تیز زبانوں سے مال غنیمت کے لالچ میں یہ لوگ ایمان لائے ہی نہیں تو اللہ نے ان کے عمل اکارت کردیے اور یہ اللہ کو آسان ہے،

وہ تمہارے معاملہ میں سخت بخیل ہیں اور جب خوف (کا وقت) آجائے تو آپ انہیں دیکھیں گے کہ وہ آپ کی طرف اس طرح دیکھتے ہیں کہ ان کی آنکھیں اس شخص کی طرح گھوم رہی ہیں جس پر موت کی غشی طاری ہو پھر جب خوف جاتا رہے تو یہ لوگ (اپنی) تیز زبانوں سے طعنہ دیتے ہیں یہ مال (غنیمت) کے بڑے حریص ہیں (دراصل) یہ لوگ ایمان لائے ہی نہیں چنانچہ اللہ نے ان کے اعمال اکارت کر دیئے ہیں اور ایسا کرنا اللہ کیلئے بالکل آسان ہے۔

يَحْسَبُونَ ٱلْأَحْزَابَ لَمْ يَذْهَبُوا۟ ۖ وَإِن يَأْتِ ٱلْأَحْزَابُ يَوَدُّوا۟ لَوْ أَنَّهُم بَادُونَ فِى ٱلْأَعْرَابِ يَسْـَٔلُونَ عَنْ أَنۢبَآئِكُمْ ۖ وَلَوْ كَانُوا۟ فِيكُم مَّا قَٰتَلُوٓا۟ إِلَّا قَلِيلًۭا

They hold that the clans have not retired (for good); and if the clans should advance (again), they would fain be in the desert with the wandering Arabs, asking for the news of you; and if they were among you, they would not give battle, save a little.

They suppose the confederates have not left yet, and were the confederates to come [again], they would wish they were in the desert with the Bedouins asking about your news, and if they were with you they would fight but a little.

They think that the confederate tribes have not yet gone. If the confederate tribes were to attack them, they would have wished to be left alone among the bedouin Arabs where they would only follow the news about you. Even if they were with you, only a few of them would take part in the fight.

They think the allies are not gone, and if the allies should come (again) they would fain be in the deserts with the desert Arabs asking for news about you, and if they were among you they would not fight save a little.

They thought the confederate tribes would never withdraw. Indeed, if the confederates should come again, they would prefer to be in the desert, among the Bedouins. There they would ask news of you [from a distance]. But if they were with you, they would take very little part in the fighting.

یہ لوگ ابھی تک اس خیال میں ہیں کہ کفار کے لشکر گئے نہیں ہیں اور اگر دوبارہ لشکر آجائیں تو یہ یہی چاہیں گے کہ اے کاش دیہاتیوں کے ساتھ صحراؤں میں آباد ہوگئے ہوتے اور وہاں سے تمہاری خبریں دریافت کرتے رہتے اور اگر تمہارے ساتھ رہتے بھی تو بہت کم ہی جہاد کرتے

یہ سمجھ رہے ہیں کہ حملہ آور گروہ ابھی گئے نہیں ہیں اور اگر وہ پھر حملہ آور ہو جائیں تو ان کا جی چاہتا ہے کہ اُس موقع پر یہ کہیں صحرا میں بدوؤں کے درمیان جا بیٹھیں اور وہیں سے تمہارے حالات پوچھتے رہیں تاہم اگر یہ تمہارے درمیان رہے بھی تو لڑائی میں کم ہی حصہ لیں گے

وہ سمجھ رہے ہیں کہ کافروں کے لشکر ابھی نہ گئے اور اگر لشکر دوبارہ آئیں تو ان کی خواہش ہوگی کہ کسی طرح گا نؤں میں نکل کر تمہاری خبریں پوچھتے اور اگر وہ تم میں رہتے جب بھی نہ لڑتے مگر تھوڑے

(دشمن چلا گیا مگر) یہ لوگ خیال کرتے ہیں کہ ابھی لشکر گئے نہیں ہیں اور اگر وہ لشکر (دوبارہ) آجائیں تو یہ پسند کریں گے کہ کاش ہم صحرا میں بدوؤں کے ساتھ جا کر رہیں اور وہاں سے تمہاری خبریں پوچھتے رہیں اور اگر تم میں ہوتے تو جب بھی (دشمن سے) جنگ نہ کرتے مگر بہت کم۔

لَّقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِى رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌۭ لِّمَن كَانَ يَرْجُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلْيَوْمَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَ وَذَكَرَ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرًۭا

Verily in the messenger of Allah ye have a good example for him who looketh unto Allah and the Last Day, and remembereth Allah much.

وَلَمَّا رَءَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ٱلْأَحْزَابَ قَالُوا۟ هَٰذَا مَا وَعَدَنَا ٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ وَصَدَقَ ٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ ۚ وَمَا زَادَهُمْ إِلَّآ إِيمَٰنًۭا وَتَسْلِيمًۭا

And when the true believers saw the clans, they said: This is that which Allah and His messenger promised us. Allah and His messenger are true. It did but confirm them in their faith and resignation.

But when the faithful saw the confederates, they said, [This is what Allah and His Apostle had promised us, and Allah and His Apostle were true.] And it only increased them in faith and submission.

On seeing the confederate tribes, the believers said, [This is what God and His Messenger had promised us. The promise of God and His Messenger is true.] This only strengthens their faith and their desire of submission to the will of God.

And when the believers saw the allies, they said: This is what Allah and His Apostle promised us, and Allah and His Apostle spoke the truth; and it only increased them in faith and submission.

When the believers saw the confederates, they said, [This is what God and His Messenger have promised us. Surely the promise of God and His Messenger has come true.] It served to increase them in faith and submission.

اور صاحبانِ ایمان کا یہ عالم ہے کہ جب انہوں نے کفر کے لشکروں کو دیکھا تو پکار اٹھے کہ یہ وہی بات ہے جس کا خدا اور رسول نے وعدہ کیا تھا اور خدا و رسول کا وعدہ بالکل سچا ہے اور اس ہجوم نے ان کے ایمان اور جذبہ تسلیم میں مزید اضافہ ہی کردیا

اور سچے مومنوں (کا حال اُس وقت یہ تھا کہ) جب انہوں نے حملہ آور لشکروں کو دیکھا تو پکار اٹھے کہ ——یہ وہی چیز ہے جس کا اللہ اور اس کے رسول نے ہم سے وعدہ کیا تھا، اللہ اور اُس کے رسولؐ کی بات بالکل سچّی تھی—— اِس واقعہ نے اُن کے ایمان اور ان کی سپردگی کو اور زیادہ بڑھا دیا

اور جب مسلمانوں نے کافروں کے لشکر دیکھے بولے یہ ہے وہ جو ہمیں وعدہ دیا تھا اللہ اور اس کے رسول نے اور سچ فرمایا اللہ اور اس کے رسول نے اور اس سے انہیں نہ بڑھا مگر ایمان اور اللہ کی رضا پر راضی ہونا،

اور (سچے) اہلِ ایمان کا حال یہ تھا کہ جب انہوں نے لشکروں کو دیکھا تو کہنے لگے کہ یہ ہے وہ (لشکر) جس کا خدا اور رسول نے وعدہ کیا تھا اور خدا اور رسول نے سچ فرمایا تھا اور اس (بات) نے ان کے ایمان اور (جذبۂ) تسلیم میں مزید اضافہ کر دیا۔

مِّنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ رِجَالٌۭ صَدَقُوا۟ مَا عَٰهَدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ عَلَيْهِ ۖ فَمِنْهُم مَّن قَضَىٰ نَحْبَهُۥ وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَنتَظِرُ ۖ وَمَا بَدَّلُوا۟ تَبْدِيلًۭا

⦿

Of the believers are men who are true to that which they covenanted with Allah. Some of them have paid their vow by death (in battle), and some of them still are waiting; and they have not altered in the least;

Among the faithful are men who fulfill what they have pledged to Allah: there are some among them who have fulfilled their pledge, and some of them who still wait, and they have not changed in the least,

Among the believers there are people who are true in their promise to God. Some of them have already passed away and some of them are waiting. They never yield to any change.

Of the believers are men who are true to the covenant which they made with Allah: so of them is he who accomplished his vow, and of them is he who yet waits, and they have not changed in the least

Among the believers there are men who have been true to the pledge they made with God. Among them are such as have fulfilled their vow, and some who [still] wait, without having changed [their resolve] in the least.

مومنین میں ایسے بھی مردُ میدان ہیں جنہوں نے اللہ سے کئے وعدہ کو سچ کر دکھایا ہے ان میں بعض اپنا وقت پورا کرچکے ہیں اور بعض اپنے وقت کا انتظار کررہے ہیں اور ان لوگوں نے اپنی بات میں کوئی تبدیلی نہیں پیدا کی ہے

ایمان لانے والوں میں ایسے لوگ موجود ہیں جنہوں نے اللہ سے کیے ہوئے عہد کو سچا کر دکھایا ہے ان میں سے کوئی اپنی نذر پوری کر چکا اور کوئی وقت آنے کا منتظر ہے انہوں نے اپنے رویے میں کوئی تبدیلی نہیں کی

مسلمانوں میں کچھ وہ مرد ہیں جنہوں نے سچا کردیا جو عہد اللہ سے کیا تھا تو ان میں کوئی اپنی منت پوری کرچکا اور کوئی راہ دیکھ رہا ہے اور وہ ذرا نہ بدلے

اور اہلِ ایمان میں سے کچھ ایسے بھی ہیں جنہوں نے وہ عہد و پیمان سچا کر دکھایا جو اللہ سے کیا تھا۔ سو ان میں سے کچھ وہ ہیں جو اپنا وقت پورا کر چکے ہیں اور کچھ اس (وقت) کا انتظار کر رہے ہیں اور انہوں نے (اپنی روش میں) ذرا بھی تبدیلی نہیں کی۔

لِّيَجْزِىَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ بِصِدْقِهِمْ وَيُعَذِّبَ ٱلْمُنَٰفِقِينَ إِن شَآءَ أَوْ يَتُوبَ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ غَفُورًۭا رَّحِيمًۭا

That Allah may reward the true men for their truth, and punish the hypocrites if He will, or relent toward them (if He will). Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

وَرَدَّ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِغَيْظِهِمْ لَمْ يَنَالُوا۟ خَيْرًۭا ۚ وَكَفَى ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ٱلْقِتَالَ ۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ قَوِيًّا عَزِيزًۭا

And Allah repulsed the disbelievers in their wrath; they gained no good. Allah averted their attack from the believers. Allah is ever Strong, Mighty.

Allah sent back the faithless in their rage, without their attaining any advantage, and Allah spared the faithful of fighting, and Allah is all-strong, all-mighty.

وَأَنزَلَ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَٰهَرُوهُم مِّنْ أَهْلِ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ مِن صَيَاصِيهِمْ وَقَذَفَ فِى قُلُوبِهِمُ ٱلرُّعْبَ فَرِيقًۭا تَقْتُلُونَ وَتَأْسِرُونَ فَرِيقًۭا

And He brought those of the People of the Scripture who supported them down from their strongholds, and cast panic into their hearts. Some ye slew, and ye made captive some.

And He dragged down from their strongholds those who had backed them from among the People of the Book, and He cast terror into their hearts, [so that] you killed a part of them, and took captive [another] part.

God brought down those among the People of the Book who had supported the confederate tribes from their castles and struck their hearts with terror. You did away with some of them and captured the others.

وَأَوْرَثَكُمْ أَرْضَهُمْ وَدِيَٰرَهُمْ وَأَمْوَٰلَهُمْ وَأَرْضًۭا لَّمْ تَطَـُٔوهَا ۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ قَدِيرًۭا

And He caused you to inherit their land and their houses and their wealth, and land ye have not trodden. Allah is ever Able to do all things.

O Prophet! Say unto thy wives: If ye desire the world's life and its adornment, come! I will content you and will release you with a fair release.

But if ye desire Allah and His messenger and the abode of the Hereafter, then lo! Allah hath prepared for the good among you an immense reward.

The Arabic text of the Quran was obtained from Tanzil. The additional translations were also obtained from Tanzil from this link.
