Luqman [ 31:12 ] لقمان

وَلَقَدْ

And certainly

ءَاتَيْنَا

We gave to

لُقْمَٰنَ

Luqman

ٱلْحِكْمَةَ

the wisdom

أَنِ

that

ٱشْكُرْ

— [Be of acknowledgement

لِلَّهِ

for the One;

وَمَن

and whoever

يَشْكُرْ

gives acknowledgement

فَإِنَّمَا

then it is that

يَشْكُرُ

gives acknowledgement

لِنَفْسِهِۦ

for himself;

وَمَن

and whoever

كَفَرَ

denies,

فَإِنَّ

then

ٱللَّهَ

the One is

غَنِىٌّ

sufficient of

حَمِيدٌۭ

praise.] —

٣١

١٢

وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا لُقْمَٰنَ ٱلْحِكْمَةَ أَنِ ٱشْكُرْ لِلَّهِ ۚ وَمَن يَشْكُرْ فَإِنَّمَا يَشْكُرُ لِنَفْسِهِۦ ۖ وَمَن كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَنِىٌّ حَمِيدٌۭ

And certainly We gave to Luqman the wisdom that — [Be of acknowledgement for the One; and whoever gives acknowledgement then it is that gives acknowledgement for himself; and whoever denies, then the One is sufficient of praise.] —

And verily We gave Luqman wisdom, saying: Give thanks unto Allah; and whosoever giveth thanks, he giveth thanks for (the good of) his soul. And whosoever refuseth - Lo! Allah is Absolute, Owner of Praise.

Certainly We gave Luqman wisdom, saying, [Give thanks to Allah; and whoever gives thanks, gives thanks only for his own sake. And whoever is ungrateful, [let him know that] Allah is indeed all-sufficient, all-laudable.]

We gave wisdom to Luqman so that he would give thanks to God. Those who give thanks to God do so for their own good. Those who are ungrateful should know that God is Self-sufficient and Praiseworthy.

And certainly We gave wisdom to Luqman, saying: Be grateful to Allah. And whoever is grateful, he is only grateful for his own soul; and whoever is ungrateful, then surely Allah is Self-sufficient, Praised.

اور ہم نے لقمان کو حکمت عطا کی کہ پروردگار کا شکریہ ادا کرو اور جو بھی شکریہ ادا کرتا ہے وہ اپنے ہی فائدہ کے لئے کرتا ہے اور جو کفرانِ نعمت کرتا ہے اسے معلوم رہے کہ خدا بے نیاز بھی ہے اور قابل حمدوثنا بھی ہے

ہم نے لقمان کو حکمت عطا کی تھی کہ اللہ کا شکر گزار ہو جو کوئی شکر کرے اُس کا شکر اُس کے اپنے ہی لیے مفید ہے اور جو کوئی کفر کرے تو حقیقت میں اللہ بے نیاز اور آپ سے آپ محمود ہے

اور بیشک ہم نے لقمان کو حکمت عطا فرمائی کہ اللہ کا شکر کر اور جو شکر کرے وہ اپنے بھلے کو شکر کرتا ہے اور جو ناشکری کرے تو بیشک اللہ بے پرواہ ہے سب خوبیاں سراہا،

اور ہم نے لقمان کو حکمت (و دانائی) عطا کی (اور کہا) کہ خدا کا شکر ادا کرو اور جو شکر ادا کرتا ہے وہ اپنے ہی فائدہ کیلئے شکر ادا کرتا ہے اور جو کفرانِ نعمت (ناشکری) کرتا ہے (وہ اپنا نقصان کرتا ہے کیونکہ) بے شک اللہ بے نیاز ہے (اور) لائقِ حمد و ثنا ہے۔

وَإِذْ قَالَ لُقْمَٰنُ لِٱبْنِهِۦ وَهُوَ يَعِظُهُۥ يَٰبُنَىَّ لَا تُشْرِكْ بِٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنَّ ٱلشِّرْكَ لَظُلْمٌ عَظِيمٌۭ

And (remember) when Luqman said unto his son, when he was exhorting him: O my dear son! Ascribe no partners unto Allah. Lo! to ascribe partners (unto Him) is a tremendous wrong -

When Luqman said to his son, as he advised him: [O my son! Do not ascribe any partners to Allah. Polytheism is indeed a great injustice.]

Luqman advised his son telling him, [My son, do not consider anything equal to God, for it is the greatest injustice.]

And when Luqman said to his son while he admonished him: O my son! do not associate aught with Allah; most surely polytheism is a grievous iniquity--

یاد کرو جب لقمان اپنے بیٹے کو نصیحت کر رہا تھا تو اس نے کہا ——بیٹا! خدا کے ساتھ کسی کو شریک نہ کرنا، حق یہ ہے کہ شرک بہت بڑا ظلم ہے——

١٤

وَوَصَّيْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ بِوَٰلِدَيْهِ حَمَلَتْهُ أُمُّهُۥ وَهْنًا عَلَىٰ وَهْنٍۢ وَفِصَٰلُهُۥ فِى عَامَيْنِ أَنِ ٱشْكُرْ لِى وَلِوَٰلِدَيْكَ إِلَىَّ ٱلْمَصِيرُ

⦿

And We have enjoined upon man concerning his partners - His mother beareth him in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years - Give thanks unto Me and unto thy parents. Unto Me is the journeying.

We have enjoined man concerning his parents: His mother carried him through weakness upon weakness, and his weaning takes two years. Give thanks to Me and to your parents. To Me is the return.

(Concerning his parents), We advised the man, whose mother bears him with great pain and breast-feeds him for two years, to give thanks to Me first and then to them, to Me all things proceed.

And We have enjoined man in respect of his parents-- his mother bears him with faintings upon faintings and his weaning takes two years-- saying: Be grateful to Me and to both your parents; to Me is the eventual coming.

اور ہم نے انسان کو ماں باپ کے بارے میں نصیحت کی ہے کہ اس کی ماں نے دکھ پر دکھ سہہ کر اسے پیٹ میں رکھا ہے اور اس کی دودھ بڑھائی بھی دوسال میں ہوئی ہے ...._ کہ میرا اور اپنے ماں باپ کا شکریہ ادا کرو کہ تم سب کی بازگشت میری ہی طرف ہے

اور حقیقت یہ ہے کہ ہم نے انسان کو اپنے والدین کا حق پہچاننے کی خود تاکید کی ہے اُس کی ماں نے ضعف پر ضعف اُٹھا کر اسے اپنے پیٹ میں رکھا اور دو سال اُس کا دودھ چھوٹنے میں لگے (اِسی لیے ہم نے اُس کو نصیحت کی کہ) میرا شکر کر اور اپنے والدین کا شکر بجا لا، میری ہی طرف تجھے پلٹنا ہے

اور ہم نے آدمی کو اس کے ماں باپ کے بارے میں تاکید فرمائی اس کی ماں نے اسے پیٹ میں رکھا کمزوری پر کمزوری جھیلتی ہوئی اور اس کا دودھ چھوٹنا دو برس میں ہے یہ کہ حق مان میرا اور اپنے ماں باپ کا آخر مجھی تک آنا ہے،

اور ہم نے انسان کو اس کے ماں باپ کے بارے میں (حسنِ سلوک کرنے کا) تاکیدی حکم دیا (کیونکہ) اس کی ماں نے کمزوری پر کمزوری سہہ کر اسے (پیٹ میں) اٹھائے رکھا اور دو برس میں اس کا دودھ چھوٹا (وہ تاکیدی حکم یہ تھا کہ) میرا اور اپنے ماں باپ کا شکریہ ادا کر (آخرکار) میری ہی طرف (تمہاری) بازگشت ہے۔

وَإِن جَٰهَدَاكَ عَلَىٰٓ أَن تُشْرِكَ بِى مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِۦ عِلْمٌۭ فَلَا تُطِعْهُمَا ۖ وَصَاحِبْهُمَا فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا مَعْرُوفًۭا ۖ وَٱتَّبِعْ سَبِيلَ مَنْ أَنَابَ إِلَىَّ ۚ ثُمَّ إِلَىَّ مَرْجِعُكُمْ فَأُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ

⦿

But if they strive with thee to make thee ascribe unto Me as partner that of which thou hast no knowledge, then obey them not. Consort with them in the world kindly, and follow the path of him who repenteth unto Me. Then unto Me will be your return, and I shall tell you what ye used to do -

But if they urge you to ascribe to Me as partner that of which you have no knowledge, then do not obey them. Keep their company honourably in this world and follow the way of those who turn to Me penitently. Then to Me will be your return, whereat I will inform you concerning what you used to do.

If they try to force you to consider things equal to Me, which you cannot justify, equal to Me, do not obey them. Maintain lawful relations with them in this world and follow the path of those who turn in repentance to Me. To Me you will all return and I shall tell you all that you have done.

And if they contend with you that you should associate with Me what you have no knowledge of, do not obey them, and keep company with them in this world kindly, and follow the way of him who turns to Me, then to Me is your return, then will I inform you of what you did--

But if they press you to associate something with Me about which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. Yet be kind to them in this world and follow the path of those who turn to Me. You will all return to Me in the end, and I will tell you everything that you have done.

اور اگر تمہارے ماں باپ اس بات پر زور دیں کہ کسی ایسی چیز کو میرا شریک بناؤ جس کا تمہیں علم نہیں ہے تو خبردار ان کی اطاعت نہ کرنا لیکن دنیا میں ان کے ساتھ نیکی کا برتاؤ کرنا اور اس کے راستے کو اختیار کرنا جو میری طرف متوجہ ہو پھر اس کے بعد تم سب کی بازگشت میری ہی طرف ہے اور اس وقت میں بتاؤں گا کہ تم لوگ کیا کررہے تھے

لیکن اگر وہ تجھ پر دباؤ ڈالیں کہ میرے ساتھ تو کسی ایسے کو شریک کرے جسے تو نہیں جانتا تو ان کی بات ہرگز نہ مان دُنیا میں ان کے ساتھ نیک برتاؤ کرتا رہ مگر پیروی اُس شخص کے راستے کی کر جس نے میری طرف رجوع کیا ہے پھر تم سب کو پلٹنا میری ہی طرف ہے، اُس وقت میں تمہیں بتا دوں گا کہ تم کیسے عمل کرتے رہے ہو

اور اگر وہ دونوں تجھ سے کوشش کریں کہ میرا شریک ٹھہرائے ایسی چیز کو جس کا تجھے علم نہیں تو ان کا کہنا نہ مان اور دنیا میں اچھی طرح ان کا ساتھ دے اور اس کی راہ چل جو میری طرف رجوع لایا پھر میری ہی طرف تمہیں پھر آنا ہے تو میں بتادوں گا جو تم کرتے تھے

اور اگر وہ تجھ پر دباؤ ڈالیں کہ تو کسی ایسی چیز کو میرا شریک ٹھہرائے جس کا تجھے کوئی علم نہیں ہے تو پھر ان کی اطاعت نہ کر اور دنیا میں ان کے ساتھ نیک سلوک کر اور اس شخص کے راستہ کی پیروی کر جو (ہر معاملہ میں) میری طرف رجوع کرے پھر تم سب کی بازگشت میری ہی طرف ہے۔ تو (اس وقت) میں تمہیں بتاؤں گا کہ جو کچھ تم کیا کرتے تھے۔

يَٰبُنَىَّ إِنَّهَآ إِن تَكُ مِثْقَالَ حَبَّةٍۢ مِّنْ خَرْدَلٍۢ فَتَكُن فِى صَخْرَةٍ أَوْ فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ أَوْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ يَأْتِ بِهَا ٱللَّهُ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَطِيفٌ خَبِيرٌۭ

⦿

O my dear son! Lo! though it be but the weight of a grain of mustard-seed, and though it be in a rock, or in the heavens, or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Lo! Allah is Subtile, Aware.

[O my son! Even if it should be the weight of a mustard seed, and [even though] it should be in a rock, or in the heavens, or in the earth, Allah will produce it. Indeed Allah is all-attentive, all-aware.

[My son, God keeps the records of all the good and evil deeds, even if they are as small as a grain of mustard seed, hidden in a rock or in the heavens or the earth. God is subtle and All-aware.

O my son! surely if it is the very weight of the grain of a mustard-seed, even though it is in (the heart of) rock, or (high above) in the heaven or (deep down) in the earth, Allah will bring it (to light); surely Allah is Knower of subtleties, Aware;

[Luqman further said,] [O my son! Though it be but the weight of a grain of mustard seed and though it be hidden in a rock, or in the heavens or on the earth, God will bring it forth. Truly, God is the knower of all subtleties and He is aware.

بیٹا نیکی یا بدی ایک رائی کے دانہ کے برابر ہو اور کسی پتھر کے اندر ہو یا آسمانوں پر ہو یا زمینوں کی گہرائیوں میں ہو تو خدا روزِ قیامت ضرور اسے سامنے لائے گا کہ وہ لطیف بھی ہے اور باخبر بھی ہے

(اور لقمان نے کہا تھا کہ) ——بیٹا، کوئی چیز رائی کے دانہ برابر بھی ہو اور کسی چٹان میں یا آسمانوں یا زمین میں کہیں چھپی ہوئی ہو، اللہ اُسے نکال لائے گا وہ باریک بیں اور باخبر ہے

اے میرے بیٹے برائی اگر رائی کے دانہ برابر ہو پھر وہ پتھر کی چٹان میں یا آسمان میں یا زمین میں کہیں ہو اللہ اسے لے آئے گا بیشک اللہ ہر باریکی کا جاننے والا خبردار ہے

اے بیٹا! اگر کوئی (نیک یا بد) عمل رائی کے دانہ کے برابر بھی ہو اور کسی پتھر کے نیچے ہو یا آسمانوں میں یا زمین میں تو اللہ اسے لے ہی آئے گا بے شک اللہ بڑا باریک بین اور بڑا باخبر ہے۔

يَٰبُنَىَّ أَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَأْمُرْ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَٱنْهَ عَنِ ٱلْمُنكَرِ وَٱصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَآ أَصَابَكَ ۖ إِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ مِنْ عَزْمِ ٱلْأُمُورِ

⦿

O my dear son! Establish worship and enjoin kindness and forbid iniquity, and persevere whatever may befall thee. Lo! that is of the steadfast heart of things.

O my son! Maintain the prayer and bid what is right and forbid what is wrong, and be patient through whatever may befall you. That is indeed the steadiest of courses.

My son, be steadfast in prayer. Make others do good. Prevent them from doing evil. Be patient in hardship. Patience comes from faith and determination.

⦿

O my son! keep up prayer and enjoin the good and forbid the evil, and bear patiently that which befalls you; surely these acts require courage;

⦿

O my dear son! Say your prayers regularly, and enjoin good, and forbid evil, and endure patiently whatever may befall you. Surely, this is something which requires firm resolve.

بیٹا نماز قائم کرو, نیکیوں کا حکم دو, برائیوں سے منع کرو, اور اس راہ میں جو مصیبت پڑے اس پر صبر کرو کہ یہ بہت بڑی ہمت کا کام ہے

Turn not thy cheek in scorn toward folk, nor walk with pertness in the land. Lo! Allah loveth not each braggart boaster.

أَلَمْ تَرَوْا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَخَّرَ لَكُم مَّا فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَأَسْبَغَ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعَمَهُۥ ظَٰهِرَةًۭ وَبَاطِنَةًۭ ۗ وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يُجَٰدِلُ فِى ٱللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍۢ وَلَا هُدًۭى وَلَا كِتَٰبٍۢ مُّنِيرٍۢ

See ye not how Allah hath made serviceable unto you whatsoever is in the skies and whatsoever is in the earth and hath loaded you with His favours both without and within? Yet of mankind is he who disputeth concerning Allah, without knowledge or guidance or a scripture giving light.

Do you not see that Allah has disposed for you whatever there is in the heavens and whatever there is in the earth and He has showered upon you His blessings, the outward, and the inward? And if it be said unto them: Follow that which Allah hath revealed, they say: Nay, but we follow that wherein we found our fathers. What! Even though the devil were inviting them unto the doom of flame?

Whosoever surrendereth his purpose to Allah while doing good, he verily hath grasped the firm hand-hold. Unto Allah belongeth the sequel of all things.

This website is a work of passion. It exists only for a couple of reasons:

1) I wanted to understand the Book without involving any second-party sources of guidance i.e. exegesis, or Asbab-e-Nuzul, or extra-Quranic ahadith, etc.
2) You must also know what the bare truth is, so we can work together.

Because the process must be transparent, the entire website is available for you to download. You can go through the code, and if you can make any improvements to this process, you are most welcome to. It is a humble request to update me regarding the improvements so I can also update myself.

Due Credits:

This website was possible by help of many people and forums who helped me to learn Arabic, Philosophy, Law, Psychology, and PHP and other Web scripts. To be honest, I do not even know the names of many but I did learn from them. Some of these people were already dead by the time I read their input.

The entire code of this website is available for the same reason, that what they taught me, I can only pay it forward.

The Arabic text of the Quran was obtained from Tanzil. The additional translations were also obtained from Tanzil from this link.

The social-sharing images of verses were obtained from Legacy Quran.com, and were then resized for proper social-media display.
