خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةًۭ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

Allah created the heavens and the earth with truth. Lo! therein is indeed a portent for believers.

ٱتْلُ مَآ أُوحِىَ إِلَيْكَ مِنَ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ وَأَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ ۖ إِنَّ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ تَنْهَىٰ عَنِ ٱلْفَحْشَآءِ وَٱلْمُنكَرِ ۗ وَلَذِكْرُ ٱللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مَا تَصْنَعُونَ

⦿

Recite that which hath been inspired in thee of the Scripture, and establish worship. Lo! worship preserveth from lewdness and iniquity, but verily remembrance of Allah is more important. And Allah knoweth what ye do.

Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book, and maintain the prayer. Indeed the prayer restrains from indecent and wrongful conduct, and the remembrance of Allah is surely greater. And Allah knows whatever [deeds] you do.

(Muhammad), recite to them what has been revealed to you in the Book and be steadfast in prayer; prayer keeps one away from indecency and evil. It is the greatest act of worshipping God. God knows what you do.

Recite that which has been revealed to you of the Book and keep up prayer; surely prayer keeps (one) away from indecency and evil, and certainly the remembrance of Allah is the greatest, and Allah knows what you do.

٤٦

وَلَا تُجَٰدِلُوٓا۟ أَهْلَ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ إِلَّا بِٱلَّتِى هِىَ أَحْسَنُ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ مِنْهُمْ ۖ وَقُولُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِٱلَّذِىٓ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْنَا وَأُنزِلَ إِلَيْكُمْ وَإِلَٰهُنَا وَإِلَٰهُكُمْ وَٰحِدٌۭ وَنَحْنُ لَهُۥ مُسْلِمُونَ

⦿

And argue not with the People of the Scripture unless it be in (a way) that is better, save with such of them as do wrong; and say: We believe in that which hath been revealed unto us and revealed unto you; our Allah and your Allah is One, and unto Him we surrender.

Do not argue with the People of the Book except in a manner which is best, except such of them as are wrongdoers, and say, [We believe in what has been sent down to us and in what has been sent down to you; our God and your God is one [and the same], and to Him do we submit.]

Do not argue with the People of the Book except only by the best manner, except the unjust among them. Tell them, [We believe in what is revealed to us and to you. Our Lord and your Lord is one. We have submitted ourselves to His will].

And do not dispute with the followers of the Book except by what is best, except those of them who act unjustly, and say: We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you, and our Allah and your Allah is One, and to Him do we submit.

Believers, argue only in the best way with the People of the Book, [but contend not at all] with such of them as are unjust. Say, [We believe in what has been revealed to us, and what has been revealed to you; our God and your God are one; and to Him we submit.]

اور اہلِ کتاب سے مناطرہ نہ کرو مگر اس انداز سے جو بہترین انداز ہے علاوہ ان سے جو ان میں سے ظالم ہیں اور یہ کہو کہ ہم اس پر ایمان لائے ہیں جو ہماری اور تمہاری دونوں کی طرف نازل ہوا ہے اور ہمارا اور تمہارا خدا ایک ہی ہے اور ہم سب اسی کے اطاعت گزار ہیں

اور اہل کتاب سے بحث نہ کرو مگر عمدہ طریقہ سے، سوائے اُن لوگوں کے جو اُن میں سے ظالم ہوں، اور اُن سے کہو کہ ——ہم ایمان لائے ہیں اُس چیز پر بھی جو ہماری طرف بھیجی گئی ہے اور اُس چیز پر بھی جو تمہاری طرف بھیجی گئی تھی، ہمارا خدا اور تمہارا خدا ایک ہی ہے اور ہم اُسی کے مُسلم (فرماں بردار) ہیں——

اور اے مسلمانو! کتابیوں سے نہ جھگڑو مگر بہتر طریقہ پر مگر وہ جنہوں نے ان میں سے ظلم کیا اور کہو ہم ایمان لائے اس پر جو ہماری طرف اترا اور جو تمہاری طرف اترا اور ہمارا تمہارا ایک معبود ہے اور ہم اس کے حضور گردن رکھتے ہیں

اور (اے مسلمانو!) تم اہلِ کتاب سے بحث و مباحثہ نہ کرو مگر بہترین انداز سے سوائے ان کے جو ان میں سے ظالم ہیں اور (ان سے) کہو کہ ہم تو اس (کتاب) پر بھی ایمان لائے ہیں جو ہماری طرف نازل کی گئی ہے اور اس (کتاب پر بھی) جو تمہاری طرف نازل کی گئی ہے اور ہمارا اور تمہارا الٰہ (اللہ) ایک ہے اور ہم سب اسی کے فرمانبردار ہیں۔

وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَنزَلْنَآ إِلَيْكَ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ ۚ فَٱلَّذِينَ ءَاتَيْنَٰهُمُ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِۦ ۖ وَمِنْ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ مَن يُؤْمِنُ بِهِۦ ۚ وَمَا يَجْحَدُ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَآ إِلَّا ٱلْكَٰفِرُونَ

⦿

In like manner We have revealed unto thee the Scripture, and those unto whom We gave the Scripture aforetime will believe therein; and of these (also) there are some who believe therein. And none deny Our revelations save the disbelievers.

Thus We have sent down the Book to you; those to whom We have given the Book believe in it, and of these there are some who believe in it, and none contests Our signs except the faithless.

We have revealed the Book to you. Some of the People of the Book and some of the pagans also believe in it. No one rejects Our revelations except the infidels.

And thus have We revealed the Book to you. So those whom We have given the Book believe in it, and of these there are those who believe in it, and none deny Our communications except the unbelievers.

Likewise We have sent down the Book to you. Those to whom We gave the scripture believe in it, and so do some of your own people. Only those who deny the truth reject Our revelations.

اور اسی طرح ہم نے آپ کی طرف کتاب نازل کی تو جن لوگوں کو ہم نے کتاب دی ہے وہ اس کتاب پر ایمان رکھتے ہیں اور ِن میں سے بھی بعض لوگ ایمان رکھتے ہیں اور ہماری آیات کا انکار کافروں کے علاوہ کوئی نہیں کرتا ہے

(اے نبیؐ) ہم نے اِسی طرح تمہاری طرف کتاب نازل کی ہے، اس لیے وہ لوگ جن کو ہم نے پہلے کتاب دی تھی وہ اس پر ایمان لاتے ہیں، اور اِن لوگوں میں سے بھی بہت سے اس پر ایمان لا رہے ہیں، اور ہماری آیات کا انکار صرف کافر ہی کرتے ہیں

اور اے محبوب! یونہی تمہاری طرف کتاب اتاری تو وہ جنہیں ہم نے کتا ب عطا فرمائی اس پر ایمان لاتے ہیں، اور کچھ ان میں سے ہیں جو اس پر ایمان لاتے ہیں، اور ہماری آیتوں سے منکر نہیں ہوتے مگر

اور (اے رسول(ص)) ہم نے اسی طرح آپ پر کتاب نازل کی ہے (جس طرح پہلے رسولوں پر کتابیں نازل کی تھیں) تو جن کو ہم نے (پہلے) کتاب دی تھی وہ اس (قرآن) پر ایمان لاتے ہیں اور ان (اہلِ مکہ و عرب) میں سے بھی بعض اس پر ایمان لا رہے ہیں اور ہماری آیتوں کا کافروں کے سوا اور کوئی انکار نہیں کرتا۔

وَمَا كُنتَ تَتْلُوا۟ مِن قَبْلِهِۦ مِن كِتَٰبٍۢ وَلَا تَخُطُّهُۥ بِيَمِينِكَ ۖ إِذًۭا لَّٱرْتَابَ ٱلْمُبْطِلُونَ

And thou (O Muhammad) wast not a reader of any scripture before it, nor didst thou write it with thy right hand, for then might those have doubted, who follow falsehood.

You did not use to recite any scripture before it, nor did you write it with your right hand, for then the impugners would have been skeptical.

You were not able to read or write before the Quran was revealed to you; otherwise, the followers of falsehood would have tried to confuse the matter.

And you did not recite before it any book, nor did you transcribe one with your right hand, for then could those who say untrue things have doubted.

اور اس سے پہلے تم کوئی کتاب نہ پڑھتے تھے اور نہ اپنے ہاتھ سے کچھ لکھتے تھے یوں ہوتا تو باطل ضرور شک لاتے

اور (اے رسول(ص)) آپ اس (نزولِ قرآن) سے پہلے نہ کوئی کتاب پڑھتے تھے اور نہ ہی اپنے دائیں ہاتھ سے کچھ لکھتے تھے اگر ایسا ہوتا تو یہ اہلِ باطل ضرور (آپ کی نبوت میں) شک کرتے۔

بَلْ هُوَ ءَايَٰتٌۢ بَيِّنَٰتٌۭ فِى صُدُورِ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْعِلْمَ ۚ وَمَا يَجْحَدُ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَآ إِلَّا ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ

But it is clear revelations in the hearts of those who have been given knowledge, and none deny Our revelations save wrong-doers.

Indeed, it is [present as] manifest signs in the breasts of those who have been given knowledge, and none contests Our signs except wrongdoers.

In fact, the Quran consists of illustrious verses that exist in the hearts of those who have knowledge. No one rejects Our revelations except the unjust ones.

Nay! these are clear communications in the breasts of those who are granted knowledge; and none deny Our communications except the unjust.

But the Quran is a revelation that is clear to the hearts of those endowed with knowledge. Only the evil-doers refuse to acknowledge Our revelations.

درحقیقت یہ قرآن چند کھلی ہوئی آیتوں کا نام ہے جو ان کے سینوں میں محفوظ ہیں جنہیں علم دیا گیا ہے اور ہماری آیات کا انکار ظالموں کے علاوہ کوئی نہیں کرتا ہے

وَقَالُوا۟ لَوْلَآ أُنزِلَ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَٰتٌۭ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦ ۖ قُلْ إِنَّمَا ٱلْـَٔايَٰتُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَإِنَّمَآ أَنَا۠ نَذِيرٌۭ مُّبِينٌ

And they say: Why are not portents sent down upon him from his Lord? Say: Portents are with Allah only, and I am but a plain warner.

They say, [Why has not some sign been sent down to him from his Lord?] Say, [These signs are only from Allah, and I am only a manifest warner.]

Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Allah sufficeth for witness between me and you. He knoweth whatsoever is in the heavens and the earth. And those who believe in vanity and disbelieve in Allah, they it is who are the losers.

They bid thee hasten on the doom (of Allah). And if a term had not been appointed, the doom would assuredly have come unto them (ere now). And verily it will come upon them suddenly when they perceive not.

They ask you to hasten the punishment. Yet were it not for a specified time, the punishment would have surely overtaken them. Surely, it will overtake them suddenly while they are unaware.

1) I wanted to understand the Book without involving any second-party sources of guidance i.e. exegesis, or Asbab-e-Nuzul, or extra-Quranic ahadith, etc.
