وَأَمَّا

وَأَمَّا ٱلْغُلَٰمُ فَكَانَ أَبَوَاهُ مُؤْمِنَيْنِ فَخَشِينَآ أَن يُرْهِقَهُمَا طُغْيَٰنًۭا وَكُفْرًۭا

And as for the lad, his parents were believers and we feared lest he should oppress them by rebellion and disbelief.

And we intended that their Lord should change him for them for one better in purity and nearer to mercy.

وَأَمَّا ٱلْجِدَارُ فَكَانَ لِغُلَٰمَيْنِ يَتِيمَيْنِ فِى ٱلْمَدِينَةِ وَكَانَ تَحْتَهُۥ كَنزٌۭ لَّهُمَا وَكَانَ أَبُوهُمَا صَٰلِحًۭا فَأَرَادَ رَبُّكَ أَن يَبْلُغَآ أَشُدَّهُمَا وَيَسْتَخْرِجَا كَنزَهُمَا رَحْمَةًۭ مِّن رَّبِّكَ ۚ وَمَا فَعَلْتُهُۥ عَنْ أَمْرِى ۚ ذَٰلِكَ تَأْوِيلُ مَا لَمْ تَسْطِع عَّلَيْهِ صَبْرًۭا

And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and there was beneath it a treasure belonging to them, and their father had been righteous, and thy Lord intended that they should come to their full strength and should bring forth their treasure as a mercy from their Lord; and I did it not upon my own command. Such is the interpretation of that wherewith thou couldst not bear.

As for the wall, it belonged to two boy orphans in the city. Under it there was a treasure belonging to them. Their father had been a righteous man. So your Lord desired that they should come of age and take out their treasure—as a mercy from your Lord. I did not do that out of my own accord. This is the interpretation of that over which you could not maintain patience.]

[The tumbling wall belonged to two orphans in the town whose father was a righteous person. Underneath the wall there was a treasure that belonged to them. Your Lord wanted the orphans to find the treasure through the mercy of your Lord when they mature. I did not repair the wall out of my own desire. These were the explanations of my deeds about which you could not remain patient.]

This is the significance of that with which you could not have patience.

اور یہ دیوار شہر کے دو یتیم بچوں کی تھی اور اس کے نیچے ان کا خزانہ دفن تھا اور ان کا باپ ایک نیک بندہ تھا تو آپ کے پروردگار نے چاہا کہ یہ دونوں طاقت و توانائی کی عمر تک پہنچ جائیں اور اپنے خزانے کو نکال لیں- یہ سب آپ کے پروردگار کی رحمت ہے اور میں نے اپنی طرف سے کچھ نہیں کیا ہے اور یہ ان باتوں کی تاویل ہے جن پر آپ صبر نہیں کرسکے ہیں

اور اس دیوار کا معاملہ یہ ہے کہ یہ دو یتیم لڑکوں کی ہے جو اس شہر میں رہتے ہیں اس دیوار کے نیچے اِن بچّوں کے لیے ایک خزانہ مدفون ہے اور ان کا باپ ایک نیک آدمی تھا اس لیے تمہارے رب نے چاہا کہ یہ دونوں بچّے بالغ ہوں اور اپنا خزانہ نکال لیں یہ تمہارے رب کی رحمت کی بنا پرکیا گیا ہے، میں نے کچھ اپنے اختیار سے نہیں کر دیا ہے یہ ہے حقیقت اُن باتوں کی جن پر تم صبر نہ کر سکے——

رہی وہ دیوار وہ شہر کے دو یتیم لڑکوں کی تھی اور اس کے نیچے ان کا خزانہ تھا اور ان کا باپ نیک آدمی تھا تو آپ کے رب نے چاہا کہ وہ دونوں اپنی جوانی کو پہنچیں اور اپنا خزانہ نکالیں، آپ کے رب کی رحمت سے اور یہ کچھ میں نے اپنے حکم سے نہ کیا یہ پھیر ہے ان باتوں کا جس پر آپ سے صبر نہ ہوسکا

باقی رہا دیوار کا معاملہ تو وہ اس شہر کے دو یتیم بچوں کی تھی اور اس کے نیچے ان بچوں کا خزانہ (دفن) تھا۔ اور ان کا باپ نیک آدمی تھا۔ تو تمہارے پروردگار نے چاہا کہ وہ بچے اپنی جوانی کو پہنچیں اور اپنا خزانہ نکالیں اور یہ سب کچھ پروردگار کی رحمت کی بناء پر ہوا ہے۔ اور میں نے جو کچھ کیا ہے اپنی مرضی سے نہیں کیا (بلکہ خدا کے حکم سے کیا) یہ ہے حقیقت ان باتوں کی جن پر تم صبر نہ کر سکے۔

They will ask thee of Dhu'l-Qarneyn. Say: I shall recite unto you a remembrance of him.

حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا بَلَغَ مَغْرِبَ ٱلشَّمْسِ وَجَدَهَا تَغْرُبُ فِى عَيْنٍ حَمِئَةٍۢ وَوَجَدَ عِندَهَا قَوْمًۭا ۗ قُلْنَا يَٰذَا ٱلْقَرْنَيْنِ إِمَّآ أَن تُعَذِّبَ وَإِمَّآ أَن تَتَّخِذَ فِيهِمْ حُسْنًۭا

Till, when he reached the setting-place of the sun, he found it setting in a muddy spring, and found a people thereabout. We said: O Dhu'l-Qarneyn! Either punish or show them kindness.

When he reached the place where the sun sets, he found it setting over a warm sea, and by it he found a people. We said, [O Dhul Qarnayn! You will either punish them, or treat them with kindness.]

to the West where he found the sun setting into a warm source (spring) of water and a people living near by. We asked him, [Dhu 'l-Qarnayn, you may punish them or treat them with kindness?]

Until when he reached the place where the sun set, he found it going down into a black sea, and found by it a people. We said: O Zulqarnain! either give them a chastisement or do them a benefit.

until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it setting in a spring of murky water and near it he found some people. We said, [Dhu'l-Qarnayn! You can either punish them or else you can treat them with gentleness.]

یہاں تک کہ جب وہ غروب آفتاب کی منزل تک پہنچے تو دیکھا کہ وہ ایک کالی کیچڑ والے چشمہ میں ڈوب رہا ہے اور اس چشمہ کے پاس ایک قوم کو پایا تو ہم نے کہا کہ تمہیں اختیار ہے چاہے ان پر عذاب کرو یا ان کے درمیان حسن سلوک کی روش اختیار کرو

حتیٰ کہ جب وہ غروب آفتاب کی حَد تک پہنچ گیا تو اس نے سورج کو ایک کالے پانی میں ڈوبتے دیکھا اور وہاں اُسے ایک قوم ملی ہم نے کہا ——اے ذوالقرنین، تجھے یہ مقدرت بھی حاصل ہے کہ ان کو تکلیف پہنچائے اور یہ بھی کہ اِن کے ساتھ نیک رویّہ اختیار کرے——

یہاں تک کہ جب سورج ڈوبنے کی جگہ پہنچا اسے ایک سیاہ کیچڑ کے چشمے میں ڈوبتا پایا اور وہاں ایک قوم ملی ہم نے فرمایا اے ذوالقرنین یا تو تُو انہیں عذاب دے یا ان کے ساتھ بھلائی اختیار کرے

یہاں تک کہ وہ (چلتے چلتے) غروبِ آفتاب کے مقام پر پہنچ گیا تو اسے ایک سیاہ چشمے میں غروب ہوتا ہوا پایا۔ (محسوس کیا) اور اس کے پاس ایک قوم کو (آباد) پایا۔ ہم نے کہا اے ذوالقرنین! (تمہیں اختیار ہے) خواہ انہیں سزا دو یا ان کے ساتھ حسن سلوک کا رویہ اختیار کرو۔

He said: As for him who doeth wrong, we shall punish him, and then he will be brought back unto his Lord, Who will punish him with awful punishment!

He said, [As for him who is a wrongdoer, we will punish him. Then he shall be returned to his Lord and He will punish him with a dire punishment.

Till, when he reached the rising-place of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We had appointed no shelter therefrom.

1) I wanted to understand the Book without involving any second-party sources of guidance i.e. exegesis, or Asbab-e-Nuzul, or extra-Quranic ahadith, etc.
